Obituary for William Bennett Sorrell

William Bennett Sorrell
William Bennett “Red” “Buddy” “Bill” Sorrell Jr., 79 years old, of Manassas, Virginia, passed away on July 14, 2020, peacefully in his sleep.

He was born December 15, 1940 to the late William and Minnie Sorrell in Fishersville, Virginia. William graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in Fishersville, Virginia and received his B.A. from Salem University followed by his Masters from West Virginia University ‘66.
William married Gail Ann Cooper Sorrell in August of 1967, who survives. Also surviving are his younger brother Jim Sorrell; 3 sons, Mark Sorrell, Brian Sorrell, and Craig Sorrell with their 3 wives, Tiffany Russell, Patricia Ridley Sorrell, Angela Lengyel Sorrell, and 3 grandchildren, Teagan Sorrell, Fisher Sorrell and Calvin Sorrell.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brother, Clarence Sorrell.

“Red” was a devout husband, honored father, revered grandfather, retired teacher, exceptional coach, and a handyman that was loved by all. He had an infectious smile and a way with everyone who had the pleasure of meeting his acquaintance. Throughout his life, he was extremely fond of nature and loved camping, hunting and fishing and sharing that joy with his family. To many others, he was the consummate coach and made many lifelong connections because he loved sports and the spirit of competition that is associated with it. His friendship was boundless and he would always help a friend whenever they were in need. His caring and compassion earned him the affectionate nickname of “Mr. Bill” from young and old.
William was an active member in the Izaak Walton Society, the Knights of Columbus, and many coaching organizations throughout Manassas.

William Bennet Sorrell will be laid to rest in Stonewall Memorial Gardens in a private ceremony to be held by his family.

In lieu of flowers, family members ask that you donate to Capital Caring Hospice at 3180 Fairview Park Drive, Suite 500, Falls Church, VA 22042.
