Fred Durant Knight, age 84, of Manassas, passed away peacefully with the presence of his family on August 11, 2018.

Born January 30, 1934 in Pageland, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Cecil and Annie Knight.

Fred launched his broadcasting career in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1952. Opportunities led him to CBS radio and television in the Spartanburg-Greenville area and then to NBC (WAVY radio and TV) in Norfolk, Virginia. It was at WAVY TV where Fred thrilled youngsters with stories and adventures on the mythical island Shipwreck Island as “Captain Shipwreck.” He was also part of the Nightly New Team, but was better known as “Mr. Personality” (on radio) to the Tidewater community. In 1963 Fred moved to the Washington Metropolitan area. He was the Voice of America announcer on “African Panorama”, but increased his popularity by night as the “Washington Weatherman” (NBC and later FOX news) and entertained his listening audience by day on WWDC RADIO. In 1969, Fred and his wife, Pam, opened their first donut shop, PamE K’s, in the Northern Virginia area.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pamela Mungo Knight; his son, “Ric” Knight; and his brothers, David Knight and Cecil Knight.

Surviving are his wife, Nelly and his daughter, Pamela Knight both of Manassas, VA. Also surviving are children, Jeniellie Cruz Averion (Dean), of Gainesville, VA and Joenel B. Cruz (Ainmee) of Stafford, VA.; grandchildren Tyler Olson (Claire) of Reston, VA, and Pamela Leith (Chance) of Myrtle Beach, SC and great-grandchildren, Josslyn Leith, Ayden Leith, Rhylan Leith, Ashton Linne Olson, Jhon Alberto B. Cruz, Armionee B. Cruz, and Jazleen Cruz Averion.

Interment will be private and at a later date.
