Joseph Leonard "Joe"  Hakes
On Monday, January 23, 2023, Joseph (Joe) L. Hakes 69, was called Home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His final days were spent at home in Bristow, VA, surrounded by his family after a long illness.

Joe was born March 4, 1953, in Kalamazoo, MI to J. Edward and Lois (Wyngarden) Hakes.

He started his education in Wheaton, IL and graduated from Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL. He continued his education at Trinity (College) University and graduated in 1975, he taught high school for three years before receiving his Master Degree in Athletic Administration from Western Illinois University in 1979. He went on to coach Men’s Soccer for 18 seasons, Women’s Basketball for 6 seasons, Men’s and Women’s Tennis for 11 seasons and was an Athletic Director for 25 years before ending his career at Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, IL) in July 2020. Joe also served at Moody Bible Institute (Chicago, IL), Wheaton College, (Wheaton, IL), North Park (College) University (Chicago, IL), King (College) University, (Bristol, TN), Gordon College (Wenham, MA), and Millikin University (Decatur, IL). Joe always tried to live a life that was honoring and glorifying to his Lord Jesus Christ. His prayer was that he would always show what Christ had done for him in how he lived life and how he treated people. Like any human he was not always successful but through Christ, he was forgiven. In the words of his father before him, “he will now be living with the only Person who loves him more than we do”.

Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sue (Larson) Hakes of Bristow, VA, daughters, Samantha (Brian) Allen of Bristow, VA and Heidi Hakes of Salem, MA. Two grandchildren, Tyler and Layla Allen of Bristow, VA and two brothers, Jay (Anita) Hakes of New Orleans, LA, and Jim (Jean) Hakes of Appleton, WI., in-laws Mike (Debby) Larson, Julie (Mark) McMinamen, Micki (Billy) Shreve, Paula Larson and several cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, and his brother from another mother, Bob Graham of Denver, Colorado.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, J. Edward and Lois (Wyngarden) Hakes.

A memorial Service will be held at Gainesville United Methodist Church, 13710 Milestone Ct, Gainesville, VA, 20155 on February 19, 2023 at 2 p.m. Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center – under the direction of Connor R. Post.
