It took the best of Friends

Ray and I were the best of friends for approximately 40 - 45 years.  There are many stories to share but this one displays how great of a friendship we had.

Ray and I bought a boat together.  Actually, it was a boat that I had owned before and had sold to a neighbor.  Anyway, Ray and I bought it back.  Ray was in charge of mechanical things and I was assigned to beautification.  Cutting to the chase, we owned the boat about four years and remained friends during it all. For those who have owned a boat, you know that mean TRUE friendship.

There is one sub story that needs to be told.  On the boat's maiden volage after all the work, we were headed to Lake Anna where the girls, our wivies, were to join us an hour or so later.  While pulling the boat towards Lake Anna, we noticed a good gas price so we pulled into gas up the boat.  The tank was up forward.  Ray was up on the bow when I handed him the gas line.  He put it in.  I walked to the rear of the boat.  It was rather slow.  The gas gage did not seem to be moving at all.  I looked into the rear of the boat, to see gas covering the deck.  STOP I yelled at Ray.  You are filling the boat with gas, I mean the deck.  Well, we got things under control and headed back into Warranton to a car wash, after stopping to buy all kinds of soap and cleaner.  Tooling down the road, i looked over to Ray where he was smoking a cigarette and tosing the ashes our the window.  I yell, Ray stop.  Put out that cigarette.  I am pulling a bomb behind us and you are trying to light the fuse.  We did a great job on the boat, getting the gas and fumes out of the it.  So, on to Lake Anna we went. We launched the boat and ran it around a bit.  We looked up and the girls were waiting for us at the dock.  Not wanting to share our experience, we headed back to the dock and started to load the girls.  WHAT IS THAT SWELL, they yelled.  So we had to share the story.  As I recall, it was a very short boat ride.

We were the best of friends right up to Ray's departure for heaven.
