Retired COL Walter Edward “Ed” Higgins, 70, a resident of Burke, Virginia, for 30 years, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014 at home with family after a courageous fight against cancer.

Born September 30, 1943, in Sherman, Texas, the son of Merle and Hazel Higgins, stepson of Wayne Atkins, and brother of James Higgins. Father of and survived by, daughter Tracie, son Michael, daughter-in-law Julia and grandson Maddox.

He graduated from Sherman High School in 1962, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with his M.B.A. in 1968. He participated in R.O.T.C. while attending OU and entered the Army as a 2LT upon graduation. During his 24 year career he served in Vietnam and was stationed in Germany and many locations within the United States.

He was loved and admired by all who had the good fortune to know him and will be remembered as one of the kindest, big hearted, good story telling and generous men who ever lived. He will always be greatly loved and forever missed; our lives are fuller from having been touched by his.

A small service for family and friends will be held at Baker-Post Funeral Home in Manassas, VA, (Nokesville Rd location) on Sunday, August 24, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Graveside and interment services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on December 10, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.
