Obituary for William Howard Ashton

William Howard Ashton
On Thursday, January 10, 2019, William H. (Bill) Ashton, loving father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his Gainesville, VA home at the age of 87.

Bill was born on November 13, 1931 in McKees Rocks, PA to Charles and Olive Ashton. He served honorably in the United States Navy before marrying his life-long love, Eleanor Koger, on April 27, 1957. Together they raised two children, Kathy and Bill.

After relocating from McKees Rocks, PA to Northern Virginia in 1971, Bill joined the United States Capitol Police, where he served as a police officer until his retirement on September 8, 1992. After his retirement, Bill continued to work in private security until 2003.

Bill was the embodiment of a humble servant, who seemingly always placed others’ needs above his own, a quality borne out his deep and abiding faith. He was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching baseball and football, but his greatest passion was reserved for his family. Nothing brought Bill more joy than when he was able to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He was known for his love, generosity, and wonderful sense of humor. The twinkle in Bill’s blue eyes always projected a warmth and compassion that brought calmness and peace to those around him.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife Eleanor. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen (Kathy) Meushaw and her husband Kerry; his son William H. (Bill) Ashton II and his wife Andrea; his grandson Scott Meushaw and his wife Hannah; and grandchildren Sophia and Will Ashton.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Quantico National Cemetery, located at 18424 Joplin Rd, Triangle, VA 22172.

In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a charity that was very near to Bill’s heart.
