I have been a close friend of Bill's a very long time - at least 37 years. Bill and I worked together at the U.S. Department of Education from about 1978 until he retired in 1995 and we remained close friends to the last day of his life.
Bill was a prince of a guy! He was an exceptionally compassionate person. He not only worked for the education of children with disabilities but he also was a very close friend and mentor to staff members with disabilities. Bill had an amazing sense of humor and was just plain friendly with everybody. He made everybody feel good! I think Bill's compassion and wonderful way with people is reflected and practiced by every member of the Tyrrell family.
Bill was also a very natural public speaker. I remember he was responsible for the State Operated and State Supported program for children with disabilities, a multi-million dollar-a-year program. The States loved and respected Bill and they really loved having him speak at their regional and national meetings. He was "the man!" He had the knowledge the folks wanted!
Bill was a truly endearing person who has had a positive impact on everybody who knew him. I'm so proud to say we were close friends and he will be sorely missed by all. Ellie and I will especially miss him and we will always love him.
