A classmate of Nick’s, I met the Hempstead’s while I was in High School. I can remember vividly, like it was yesterday, the first time I played spades at the Hempstead’s house in Centreville one evening and meeting Paul for the first time. He had this way of making you feel welcome in their home and like you’d known him your whole life. He also always had a few good liners to zing in at us while us guys played into the evening hours. Nearly 25 years later and each time I saw Paul, I always had a good new story to tell – he always made people feel like they were important and he truly cared about them. I’m going to miss a lot of things about Mr. Hempstead – hanging out together with his two sons, his stories, his sometimes inappropriate jokes, dinners at fancy restaurants that were always his treat, trips to Atlantic City where he tagged along to play some slots, him in his white corvette, but I think what I’ll miss most is the way he always made you feel at home when you were around him. A special man that is gone way too soon - his memory, however, will always be alive through his two amazing sons that I'm lucky enough to call friends (and each of his 6 grandkids).
