I met Red at GWU when he was a freshman after a stint in the Navy, and I arrived having just turned 18. I called him "the old redhead" behind his back. We became instant friends, because we had something in common . . . . FOOTBALL! Red was at GWU on a football scholarship, and my dad played 8 years of college ball (just before the rule was changed) and he was a football coach for 10 years. Football had been the operative word during my growing up years. In addition I had to take Speech 101, as did Red and other football players to my surprise. When I asked why they told me because they were going to be teachers. We had to give demonstration speeches; how to do or make something. Each of the players demonstrated how to play their position. I showed how to knit Argyle socks. We were required to bring up some classmates to demonstrate what had been shown. Football players and Argyle socks; that was hysterica!! It was an interesting class and we all went on to Speech102. Red was a dear friend who was always there for me. Sometimes with advice, always a good listener, and he was my "big brother".
Elaine came to GWU in 1955. She joined my sorority Sigma Kappa, and we also became college roommates. Everyone who met Elaine loved her, including Red. I introduced them and it was instant chemistry. He gave her his Sigma Chi pin (the custom at that time) and she was known as Red's girl.
Red was one heck of a football player. The team was in the Southen Conference, so many of the games were south of DC. I had a car and took Elaine and sorority sisters to all of the games within driving distance. We had some interesting adventures. On one occasion I was stopped for speeding on the way to Richmond, and it took all of our pooled cash to pay the fine. Red and teammates gave us tickets, which were sold to provide money for some refreshment, and gas to get us home! Elaine was a wondeful sorority sister, a terrific roommate, and like Red my dear friend for over 60 years.
Red, you will be missed by old and new friends. But I know that up in heaven you have found the very best football field for a terrific football game. Your teammates at GWU are by your side as you carry the ball down the field; your FHS boys blocking for you and cheeing you on.
I love you, You Old Redhead,
Jean
