Condolence: We who played for Coach at Fairfax remember the driven competitive intense person many feared. I had the pleasure of working and playing golf with Dick after college graduation. He was still competitive, but was funny and somewhat shy. He loved to drink a beer and talk about all his ex players. Not many like him anymore. Condolences Elaine and family

Condolence: Coach Claypool you had a strong influence in who I have become. As our defensive backfield coach at GW you were a mentor to so many of us by example. I am not surprised at your success at Fairfax. You stood out as someone who would prevail. My condolences to your family. I have never forgotten your straight arrow approach to life. For a 16/17 year old it was a refreshing outlook. Rest in peace! Donald H. Shumann

Condolence: Words can’t express how sadden I am to hear of your loss of Coach Claypool. To say Coach was a larger than life character would not only be a huge understatement but it would belabor the obvious to the point of absurdity. As you know Coach was an incredibly gifted individual with a good heart that touched the lives countless individuals and not just through football. I am a better man today because I met Coach Claypool and was very fortunate to have him as my Coach. Although I have many memories about Coach in the relatively short time I interacted with him. I would like to share with you one of my most significant memories. It was during my junior season in fall of 1970 and we had a team meeting in a temporary classroom. Coach told us about how past players had visited him and they all mentioned that they wish that they could have played harder and performed better on the field because the opportunity to do so had now passed and would never come again. The statement made an impact on me and when my ten short weeks of being a BMOC ended in the fall of 1971, I knew emphatically what Coach was talking about back then. I have used that experience and others to motivate myself throughout my life. Coach really did not get the credit he deserved for the many little things he did that touched and benefited people’s lives. However, I think he was ok with that. He was a strong individual, with a compassionate side. I am still amazed by some of the things I have recently learned about him. May your hearts be filled with the many wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate the life of Coach. Please accept my prayers and heartfelt condolences and I hope that in some small way they help through these times.

Condolence: We were fortunate to know Coach Claypool as FHS Class of 1967, students. As a football player and a cheerleader we knew him on and off the field.

Later working with him as a counselor at FHS brought back many memories not to mention I had a dance partner for all school functions.

The Claypool Family is in our thoughts.

Condolence: This is one of the most difficult messages to write, there is so much to say and difficult to find the right words.
Dick was one of the most competitive people I had ever met. He faced every challenge at full speed. His fierce spirit will be missed GREATLY!
Our condolences to Elaine, Glenn and Greg.

Condolence: Dear Elaine, I was so sorry to learn of Dicks passing.
I first met you and Coach at Vienna Woods Swim Club
where all those GW guys worked or hung-out (I was 16/17). They had quite an influence on my life, best
not to talk of the details ! We had so many great times together over the years and especially at FHS.
Please pass my condolences to Glen and Greg and hope
to see you'all soon.
