My friendship with Kirsten began just about 50 years ago in Miss White’s 1st grade class at Nokesville Elementary. We became fast friends and usually found ourselves in the 1972-73 version of TIME OUT because we just couldn’t stop talking or giggling! In fact our class picture perfectly captured how our friendship with play out. Look closely and you will see that infamous impish (devilish, really) grin and those signature pig tails signifying she was up to something – which she WAS because that stinker timed it perfectly and PINCHED ME just as the picture was snapped! An EPIC Kirsten move! We have laughed about it for years and it truly epitomizes her sense of humor, mischievous side and love of a good prank! She masterminded MANY through our school years together! (Sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Giboney!)
When I suddenly had to move away the summer of our freshman year we cried in my bedroom and vowed we would always stay close. Life played out and we’d weave in and out of each other’s lives but would somehow always find our way back and when we did it was as if no time had lapsed, we just may have gotten married and had a few babies in between so we’d break out the brag books, talk, laugh and of course reminisce. As our kids grew, we found time to escape for a night or two with my favorite being the night we sat in a hot tub on a frigid night long enough for our hair to freeze!
Our last adventure was to Harper’s Ferry late last October. I’m eternally grateful to have remembered at the last minute to get our semi-annual selfie (Thelma and Louise style). Like our friendship, I will cherish it forever and I am positive I will never have a more faithful, thoughtful and loyal friend as I had in Kirsten. When I hear a bird singing, see a flower in bloom or a butterfly lighting close by I will think of my BFF and hear her contagious laugh when I do something silly. And when I join her someday, Heaven better watch out – she’s got a head start planning our future shenanigans!!
My thoughts and prayer for EVERYONE who loved her. There will never be another like her.
Xoxo – Lynn (Towne) Van Ness
